When someone who performs as a realistic-looking mermaid goes to special coordinated events or parties, underwater aquarium and tank shows, or simply decorates the space with a fun ambiance, they are considered 'Professional Mermaids'. These mermaids are people who dress up in magical mermaid attire such as beautiful hand-made seashell tops, mermaid crowns, ocean-inspired necklaces, and so much more to give their "mersona" (mermaid persona) a wave of realism. Most Professional Mermaids go by their chosen mermaid name such as 'Mermaid Elle' whom is well known in the mermaid community today!
Professional Mermaids invest in mermaid tails which are often custom-made silicone mermaid tails made from artists who make and design them. Some beginner pro-mermaids use neoprene fabric tails or tails made of swimsuit materials which is a great first move before making a bigger investment on silicone. The professional silicone mermaid tails can cost from as low as $500 and upwards of $10,000 or more. Being a professional mermaid can be very costly but also can be rewarding especially when it comes to performing at gigs.
Are There Requirements to be a Professional Mermaid/Merman?
One of the important obligations when becoming a professional is getting certified in CPR or CPR+AED in-person or doing online courses. Aspiring merfolk are gravitating towards getting certified with SSI mermaid dive training programs that offer certifications which increase eligibility with tank performances and many other different underwater performances. Some pro-mermaids are SSI mermaid trainers themselves and make a living by teaching certain mermaid-related classes that can help you become more credible as a performer and as a business.
These may sound like requirements but they are not. Mermaids are more than likely self-made entrepreneurs who want to expand their knowledge in things like breathe-work, to be eligible in performing at tank shows with different marine animals, or boost their credibility in the performance industry. With the rise in professional mermaid entrepreneurs, there is a need for certifications to prove that you are a good performer and will continue to do fin-tastically in business which is very much needed when it comes to insurance and credibility but definitely not necessary at the beginning stages of your mermaid business.
note: It's recommended to get certified in CPR+AED as a professional because of children's parties or events near and around water. It's very easy to get certified and it can be done online in very easy steps. After completed the online training courses, you will receive your certificate almost instantly as a download when you are finished and pass the tests.
There's no question that anyone and everyone can become a mer-person. It's as simple as putting on a tail and getting in the water. When it comes to integrating professionalism to the simplicity of being a realistic-looking mermaid, it is not easy. After all, mer-folk want to make a living. Centering a business around what you love to do will set you off in the right direction.
Mermaids need to advertise their business in some way which may include purchasing personalized business cards to give out to potential clients. The 'Halifax Mermaid' uses postcards to hand out to kids at events or parties. Professional merpeople may use social media platforms to showcase their work and their passion for mermaiding to entice potential clientele. Merpeople may use a third-party booking service to attract the right clients as well. There are many different types of ways to advertise a mermaid business. One of the most sought after ways to reach the right demographic is by word-of-mouth. Social media is a great tool but it is no match for in-person conversations about your business.
By traveling to different events or parties, mermaids will be able to support themselves financially and continue the joy and the magic all around the world today. There are many professional mermaids who travel globally and also make a living locally from where they reside (mermaid grotto's and caves of course)
These are the basic needs of a Professional and what you should be doing before starting a mermaid business. It's important to do your research and everyone has different ways of going about business but a good thing to pay attention to is what others are doing as well so you don't miss out on important information that you would have otherwise missed out on.
